Bridgeside Community Member Spotlight: Alyson Stover

Meet Alyson Stover, Associate Professor of the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Occupational Therapy. When she isn’t busy teaching and mentoring, you can find her traveling, reading, and hiking.

Alyson in Switzerland this past summer, getting in some of her hiking and traveling time.

As part of our Community Member Spotlight series, and in honor of April being Occupational Therapy (OT) Month, we caught up with Alyson about what she enjoys most about teaching, what she does in her free time, and some interesting facts about her!

Q: In your role, what are you responsible for?

A: As an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy, I have the privilege of teaching courses in health policy and advocacy. I also serve as a mentor for students in the post-professional Clinical Science Doctorate (CScD) program, guiding students in the development and implementation of quality improvement programs that change the way occupational therapy is practiced. My passion continues to be fueled through my research, bringing the value of occupational therapy into the intervention of substance misuse.

And as the President-Elect of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), I have the honor of representing the over 100,000 occupational therapy practitioners, educators, scientists, scholars, and students to national and international audiences. In this role, I share the vision of occupational therapy and advocate for the changes we need to see.

Q: What's something about you that's not on your resume?

A: I have loved elephants since I was an infant.  I have collected elephants from all over the world throughout my life. I am also a true crime addict and I am fairly certain that I am the best armchair detective!

Q: What excites you most about what you're teaching in school?

A: The students excite me the most; I have had the great pleasure of watching each generation become more politically knowledgeable and engaged. I love hearing that students are excited about diving into health policy!

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your time off?

A:Traveling, traveling, and traveling! I also love to read and hike with my family and dogs.

Q: What's one thing you would tell people about the Bridgeside Point Community?

A: Kindness is the culture here. Everyone at Bridgeside is quick to smile, happy to help, and always willing to lend a hand or an ear.

Q: What's your favorite restaurant/café in Oakland?

A: Fuel and Fuddle – those sweet potato fries are life sustaining!
